RITES OF PASSAGE

ECONOMY AND ECOLOGY
LAND DISTRIBUTION
Some things need coherence and consensus, meticulous planning even.
Other aspects of city growth need to be treated as raw potential and general pocket for opportunity.
To turn slightly difficult, but centrally located land with beautiful surroundings into new lots is taking a chance. It is putting faith in the citizens. It is probably also one of the simplest and most immediately rewarding forms of city planning. It requires no or little monetary investment to implement but leases generate income. Most of all it generates activity and stimulate imagination.

MOVEMENT
Traffic flow has been subject to debate ever since people started moving about.
This proposal is based on the law of the least resistance. Energy is being let in where it has been cut off but all the main links are left undisturbed. A city thrives on multiple choices.

HERITAGE
Adding to a landscape. Everything former generations have achieved might not seem great but most is usable.
The last generation's master plan is this generation's old terrain. The city is a constant inheritance it is the general landscape we build upon. Every generation does their bid, adding to an eternal construction rather than trying to achieve finalized perfection.

INTO THE WILD
Elaborate, large-scale, planning schemes have brought us a special kind of landscape to deal with. Sometimes large structures can be used to bring down the scale. Most of the time small, well-placed interventions do the trick.
Cities today are being rediscovered, redefined. Everything in them counts. It is all in our midst, before our eyes and under our feet. Many of the city's functions are being reinterpreted, existing things are given new meanings and become multidimensional. Cities can grow within existing areas, become richer, more intense, more meaningful, more enjoyable. In a quest for faster motor transportation, other means of getting across have been affected, paradoxically often those that used to get by with the least amount of fixed infrastructure. One person's path has become another person's barrier. The goal is to make the city accessible for everybody.
