FOLKPARK

FOLKPARK - PEOPLE'S PARK

A folkpark is an event in itself and a place for common play. The town of Floda already has many park ingredients scattered around a bent axis along the river and up the hill. This axis could become Floda's new backbone through a strategy of connecting what is already there.

The axis acts as a centre but also as infrastructure and a mini town plan in itself. A number of new lots are added along the axis to define and activate it.
The proposal invites Floda's present and future residents to multiply and expand, to become involved in building the town they want to live in. The projects chief aim is to create openings and opportunities for people to find and use. The space itself is the main resource.

LAYING OUT
Folkpark costs almost nothing to build but can give plenty in return. The municipality owns the land and can make decisions on favourable leases or sales contracts. A new set of rules is established for land subdivision within the park axis area, and the new rules also apply to the existing surrounding properties.

TUNING IN
Sustainability is small-scale. Finding as many shares as possible is vital for a municipality that wants to adopt a green stance. Folkpark proposes that the first step towards a future Floda is to create new outlooks on the old land, new agreements and new methods of execution.

A tightly knit town is all local; short distances invite us to bike and walk. Part village, part commuter suburb, Floda could be the spearhead in a small town renaissance when borders between work and leisure blur.

Folkpark was a competition entry for Floda urban redevelopment in Lerum, Sweden, that received a honourable mention. December 2012. Read more>
