FACES OF MODERNITY

FACES OF MODERNITY
The city block usually comes in two versions. The pre-modernist rectangle with houses that face the street and the modernist open composition. This proposal suggests a new type - a bridge between village and city. It can become dense fast or it can stay the same for a long time.
At the heart is the city common – space that everyone can use that is not for sale.

STRATEGIES
1. Use existing connections. (Add people and buildings). Southern Hilleröd has some streets ready to build up neighbourhoods around.

2. Add new connections.
Dead ends and stubs are connected. Diagonals linking the train station and the hospital area to the medic industry as well as to the campus are made.

3. Double the connections.
By creating parallells streets are turned into rows with full city potential.

DIRECTIONS
Most of the geometry is found on site. Roskildevej, Smorkildevej, dirt roads, farmers roads are all kept. Additions follow the edges of the fields or the diagonals between the different campuses.

IMMEDIATE START
New development along the existing streets can be built at once. The new connections and doubles can also be used as simple dirt roads until they need to be properly built.

GROWING FIELDS
Production corridors. The commons can be used for solar power collection, water purification, to grow crops, trade, play and rest. It’s about creating space for other needs, new needs, a freer human being.

STEADY AND READY
The main motive is not to launch a rigid axiality but to be prepared. Prepared for boom and recession. Prepared for different needs, prepared for changing lifestyles. A city is not all that different from farming – you reap what you sow.

THE RENAISSANCE OF THE ALLEY
The houses, the long row of lots is on a kind of border. One side has the main streets, the other the common – cutting across between them is the alley, the paths, the neighbourhood short cut.
